
He was the master drummer with his “Purdie Shuffle” (a signature use of triplets against a half time backbeat). The drummer in demand during this period (and still going strong today at age 81!) was Bernard “Pretty” Purdie. There was no need for drum solos, just a steady groove that set the stage for its sweet lyrics, augmented by background horns. Dominant to its appeal was soulful drumming with a backbeat. Whether it originated from Detroit, Philadelphia, or Memphis, its intoxicating old school groove lifted the spirits, either on the dance floor, or hanging with friends on a cold winter night.
